Social Responsibility

Kandahar Treasure is fully committed to supporting the improvement of women’s social and economic life in Afghanistan.  While the need is great among the women, we are limited by the security situation in the region in providing our services.  Our activities are currently on hold, but our areas of focus include:

Literacy: Over 95 percent of the women in Kandahar are illiterate. With strict patriarchal, tribal and traditional customs in place, the majority of women in this region are confined to their compounds. Their inability to move freely in society contributes to their high illiteracy rates. To help women become more self-sufficient, Kandahar Treasure would like to take literacy services to women inside their homes. Educating women this way is a slow process and not in and of itself an answer to the problem of illiteracy in Afghanistan. However, our aim is simply to prepare women to read sign boards, write and sign their names, and understand simple notes. We believe that small steps will launch big ones.

Medical Help: Illiteracy is directly linked to the many medical problems that face women and children in Southern Afghanistan. Unaware of the importance of even the most basic personal hygiene, many women find themselves and their children chronically ill. Kandahar Treasure is working to improve this situation. Our constant contact with the women allows us the opportunity to share with the women ways to avoid germs and bacteria. We also help women find proper medical care when serious health problems arise.

Financial Management:  Many of the women working with Kandahar Treasure are handling finances for the first time in their lives.  With the lack of experience, many of our workers found that they could not manage the money they earned.  Hence, Kandahar Treasure advises the women workers on how to plan, spend and manage their income that is very important for their families.
